When selecting a precision miniature ball bearing for your equipment, one of the most frequently asked questions is whether to choose a shielded or sealed version. Both designs look similar from the outside, yet they perform very differently in real-world operating conditions. Choosing the wrong type can lead to premature failure, increased maintenance costs, and unexpected downtime. In this guide, we break down the structural differences, performance characteristics, and ideal applications for both shielded and sealed bearings — so you can make the right choice the first time.
What Is a Shielded Bearing?
A shielded miniature bearing uses a thin, stamped metal cover (typically steel or stainless steel) attached to the outer ring on one or both sides. The shield sits close to the inner ring but does not physically touch it, leaving a small labyrinth gap.

How It Works
The metal shield acts as a barrier against large particles such as dust, dirt, and debris. However, because there is a small gap between the shield and the inner ring, fine dust, moisture, and chemical vapors can still penetrate over time.
Low friction: Since the shield does not contact the inner ring, there is almost no additional friction. This makes shielded bearings ideal for high speed miniature bearing applications where heat generation must be minimized.
High speed capability: Shielded bearings can operate at significantly higher rotational speeds than sealed equivalents, often reaching the limiting speed specified by the bearing manufacturer.
Low torque: The absence of contact friction means less power is wasted, which is critical in battery-powered devices such as small motors, handheld tools, and camera mechanisms.
Re-lubrication option: Single-shielded bearings (open on one side) can be re-greased during maintenance, extending service life.
Not fully sealed against moisture, chemicals, or fine dust
Not suitable for washdown environments or outdoor exposure
Requires periodic maintenance and relubrication in harsh conditions
Excellent contamination protection: The contact seal blocks dust, water, dirt, and most chemicals much more effectively than a shield.
Lubrication retention: Grease stays inside for the entire service life of the bearing, eliminating the need for re-lubrication.
Quiet operation: Sealed bearings tend to run smoother and quieter, making them ideal for low noise miniature bearing requirements in medical devices, office equipment, and home appliances.
Zero maintenance: Once installed, sealed bearings typically require no attention for years.
Higher friction: The rubber-to-inner-ring contact generates more friction and heat, reducing maximum speed capability.
Not re-lubricatable: Once the grease breaks down, the bearing must be replaced.
Higher starting torque: More force is needed to overcome seal resistance during startup

In addition to choosing between shielded and sealed, you may also consider the material. We offer stainless steel miniature bearing options (usually SUS440C) for applications where corrosion resistance is critical, such as medical instruments, food processing equipment, marine environments, and chemical processing. Stainless steel bearings are available in both shielded and sealed configurations, so you can combine corrosion resistance with the sealing type that fits your application.

Your application runs at high speed
The environment is clean and dry
You need low torque and low friction
You can perform periodic maintenance
Common uses: small electric motors, computer fans, office equipment, measuring instruments, camera lenses
Dust, water, or chemicals are present
You want zero maintenance
Quiet operation is important
The bearing is difficult to access after installation
Common uses: power tools, outdoor equipment, home appliances, medical devices, automotive components
At the end of the day, both shielded and sealed bearings are available across our full range of miniature deep groove ball bearings in 60, 62, 63, 67, 68, and 69 series. The right choice depends entirely on your operating conditions, speed requirements, and maintenance expectations.
