What Bearings Are Used in a Fan?

A fan looks like a simple product, but inside every ceiling fan, table fan, pedestal fan or exhaust fan there is a small electric motor that spins several thousand times every minute. The single part that decides whether that motor runs quietly, smoothly and for years is the fan motor bearing. Choose the wrong bearing, and the fan will hum, vibrate, or fail within months. Choose the right one, and it will run almost silently for a decade. This complete guide explains which bearing is used in a fan, the exact sizes you need (608, 6201 and 6202), how to choose the right one, and where to buy quality fan motor bearings.

What Bearing Is Used in a Fan?

Almost every household fan uses a deep groove ball bearing. There are good reasons for this: deep groove ball bearings are cheap, quiet, compact, and perfectly suited to the high-speed rotation of a fan motor (typically 1,500 to 3,000 rpm for a fan, and up to 10,000 rpm for small cooling fans).

The exact bearing depends on the motor shaft size and the fan size. As a rule:

• Small fans — cooling fans, mini stand fans, computer-style fans: use a 608 bearing (8 mm bore).

• Medium fans — standard table fans and wall fans: use a 6201 bearing (12 mm bore).

• Larger fans — big ceiling fans, exhaust fans and pedestal fans: use a 6202 bearing (15 mm bore).

In short, the fan motor bearing for most household fans is a 608, 6201 or 6202 deep groove ball bearing.

Fan Motor Bearing Types by Fan Type

Different fans place different demands on their bearings. Here is what each type of fan typically needs.

Ceiling fan bearing: Most ceiling fans use a 6201 or 6202 bearing. Because ceiling fans run for many hours every day, the bearing must be low-noise, well-lubricated and durable. A worn ceiling fan bearing is the most common reason a ceiling fan starts to hum or wobble.

Table fan bearing: Table fans use a 608 or 6201 bearing depending on the motor size. Since a table fan sits close to the user, a quiet fan motor bearing is essential — nobody wants a buzzing fan next to their bed.

Pedestal fan bearing: Pedestal fans have bigger motors and usually use a 6201 or 6202 bearing. They are often used in bedrooms and living rooms, so low noise matters as much as durability.

Exhaust fan bearing: Exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms use a 6201 or 6202 bearing, often with an RS (rubber) seal because of moisture and grease in the air.

Wall fan bearing: Wall fans typically use a 6201 bearing, the same size used in most medium household fans.

How to Choose the Right Fan Motor Bearing

If you are repairing a fan or buying bearings in bulk for production, follow these four steps.

Measure the shaft size. Use a digital caliper to measure the motor shaft. The bearing bore must match the shaft with a light press fit — for example, an 8 mm shaft needs a 608 bearing.

Check the speed and load. A fan motor bearing must be rated for the fan's operating speed. Standard deep groove ball bearings handle 5,000 to 15,000 rpm easily, which covers almost every household fan.

Choose the seal type. ZZ (metal shield) for most fans; RS (rubber seal) for humid or dusty environments such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Confirm the noise grade. For indoor fans, ask for a low-noise bearing. Many manufacturers offer noise-graded bearings (for example Z1, Z2, Z3). Z3 is the quietest and is the best choice for ceiling fans and table fans used in bedrooms.

ZZ or RS Seal — Which Is Better for a Fan?

This is one of the most common questions we receive: should a fan use ZZ or RS bearings?

ZZ (metal shield) is the best choice for most fans. It provides very low friction, which means the fan starts easily, runs quietly, and produces less heat at high speed. For clean indoor air, ZZ is more than enough.

RS (rubber seal) is better when the fan is exposed to moisture, dust or grease — for example, kitchen exhaust fans or bathroom ventilation fans. The rubber seal keeps water and dirt out of the bearing, but it adds a little friction and noise.

Rule of thumb: living-room and bedroom fans should use ZZ; kitchen and bathroom fans should use RS.

Fan Bearing Lubrication and Noise

A new fan motor bearing is packed with high-quality grease that should last for years. Two things shorten a bearing's life: dirt getting inside, and the grease drying out.

If your fan starts to hum or buzz, the bearing is usually the cause. The classic signs of a worn bearing are:

• A low hum that changes with fan speed.

• Vibration or wobbling of the fan blades.

• A scraping or grinding sound when the fan starts.

When this happens, the bearing should be replaced rather than re-lubricated — re-greasing a worn bearing only delays the problem for a few weeks.

How to Replace a Fan Bearing

Replacing a fan motor bearing is a straightforward job if you have basic tools. Here is the general process:

Switch off the power and remove the fan blades and casing.

Take out the motor from the housing.

Remove the shaft clips or lock rings, then press out the old bearing.

Clean the shaft and housing seat.

Press in the new bearing (608, 6201 or 6202 as measured) using a press or a socket — never hammer directly on the bearing.

Reassemble and test the fan for smooth, quiet rotation.

Always match the replacement to the original fan motor bearing size. When in doubt, measure the bore, OD and width and compare with the sizes listed above.
